Wig Care - How to Wash your Wig

There are many aspects of caring or a wig. It all depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it. Some people wash their wig regularly, treat it with a solution to keep its shine, color it, and store the wig on a wig head. That's quite a bit and OK for some people. While all important factors, the most important is to wash your wig properly. Below are a few pointers.

If you stop by our hair salon in NYC, we would be more than happy to show you how to wash your wig in person. Also keep in mind that all Andrew DiSimone Wig clients can have their wig washed for free every month for as long as you need to wear it.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

Human hair wigs are chemically processed in order to maintain its natural look and longevity. Please use sulfate-free products that are made for processed hair when washing your wig.
  1. Using a wig brush or comb, detangle the wig's hair starting at the ends and working upwards towards the base of the cap.
  2. In the same direction as the hair, rinse the wig in cold water. Do not soak the hair.
  3. With your fingertips gently massage phosphate-free shampoo evenly throughout the hair.
  4. In the same direction as the hair, remove shampoo with cold water.
  5. Gently pat the wig with a towel (do not squeeze or wring dry the wig).
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 with conditioner.
  7. Allow the wig to air dry by placing it on a wig stand or a bottle.
SYNTHETIC WIGS

Synthetic hair is easier to wash and style compared to human hair wigs.
  1. Using a wig brush, gently brush the wig thoroughly.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of wig shampoo to a sink filled with cold water.
  3. Soak the wig in the water. Do not rub it.
  4. Gently rinse out the shampoo in cold water.
  5. Gently pat the wig with a towel (do not squeeze or wring dry the wig).
  6. Apply conditioning spray lightly over the wig.
  7. Allow the wig to air dry by placing it on a wig stand or a bottle. Do not dry the wig on a styrofoam head, or by using a hair dryer or direct sunlight.
  8. Gently style the wig only when it's dry by using a wig brush or your fingertips.
